Favouritetable survey shows 75% of UK restaurateurs struggling with mental health

UK restaurant software management and booking business, Favouritetable, has revealed alarming rates of mental health concern among restaurateurs following the outcome of its latest ‘Big Question’ hospitality sector initiative.

Favouritetable, a leading provider of restaurant management software in the UK, conducted the ground-breaking survey by reaching out to several hundred of its restaurateur clients and other business owners to help shed light on the mental health challenges facing hospitality industry workers.

The survey, conducted over a three-month period, uncovered startling insights into the mental wellbeing of restaurant owners, managers and staff, with over 75% of respondents saying ‘yes,’ their mental health was suffering at the present time.

Reasons for their mental health struggles given by various survey participants, included:

• “It’s draining – long hours and the cost-of-living crisis”
• “Part-time workers usually have a second job, still in full-time education, or a family to look after, while full-time professionals are hit by very tight budgets”
• “Working 50-60+ hours a week leaves very little time to spend with friends and family… I had to host a few weddings with my newborn child strapped to me and the only recognition I got was a pat on the back”
• “The ease with which drink is available to staff can add to the problem. Particularly in the night-time economy the situation is much worse.”

The survey results come at a critical time for the UK hospitality sector, which has faced unprecedented challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit-related uncertainties.

With many businesses operating on thin margins and facing ongoing operational challenges, the mental health and wellbeing of those working in the industry have become increasingly precarious.

Favouritetable is now calling on the UK Government to prioritise the mental health of restaurant workers and implement measures to provide support and resources to those in need.

This includes: increased access to mental health services, financial assistance for struggling businesses, and initiatives to promote work-life balance and wellbeing within the industry.

In addition to calling for government action, Favouritetable is also offering practical support to its clients and the wider restaurant community.

The company is also in the process of compiling a list of top tips for maintaining mental health and wellbeing in the demanding environment of the hospitality sector. This will include strategies for managing stress, prioritising self-care, and seeking help when needed.
